In September 2024, I’ll attend the La Romita School of Art in the Umbrian region of Central Italy to participate in a 10-day workshop entitled Inner and Outer Views. It will be led by Fort Worth artist and instructor Carol Ivey, whom I’ve studied under in the past. Creating art en plein air (outdoors) will be a large part of the experience, and since I’m a studio artist, I’ll be well out of my comfort zone. But that’s where learning happens, right? To add an extra dimension to the experience, I want to be able to share it with you. Here’s how you can receive the benefits of being a Patron.

Q & A

1. How do I register?

Click here on any Register Today  button, which takes you to a sign-up page on my website. From the drop-down menu, select your level of patronage and go to checkout. That's it!

2. When does registration end?

Registration ends on July 31, 2024, or whenever all 15 patronage spots are filled.

3. How do I claim the credit that comes with my patronage level?

Within a week after receiving your registration and payment, I’ll send you a code to claim your credit for purchasing art on my website. Your code is unique and applies to you only. There is no obligation to use your code, but it will expire on August 31, 2024.

4. What is the Facebook journal about?

While in Italy, I’ll create five or more journal entries, posted to a private Facebook group, exclusively for my patrons. There I’ll share my experiences, posting photos and videos from the workshop and nearby outings.

5. When can I see your journal entries?

Patrons will receive an invitation to the private Facebook group sometime in August. There may be some pre-travel posts leading up to departure. I would love for you to join the group.

6. What size and type will the artwork be?

They will be small works on high quality archival paper for ease of transport, created in my choice of pen, pencil, watercolor or pastels—or a combination of these media. They will be no smaller than 5 x 7 inches and no larger than 9 x 12 inches. (Small is better when painting en plein air!)

7. How and when do I claim my art from your Italy trip?

The date and time I receive your email registration determines your place in line for choosing your free artwork, no matter which level you choose. Early birds will have more choices. Expect to hear from me by mid-October regarding when the art will be ready, and how to claim it. I’m happy to mail your artwork, but if you are in the North Texas area, feel free to schedule a pick up from my studio.

8. Uh, what the heck is a pochade box?

Glad you asked. Pochade derives from the French work poche, meaning “pocket.” It is a type of sketch used for painting in a small, portable format. A pochade box, which I’ll need to acquire for this trip, is a portable easel with storage for supplies and is used for painting en plein air. Here are photos of the pochade I constructed myself.

Now, excuse me while I go practice saying “Where is the bathroom?” in Italian.
