From high on the ridge overlooking the Rio Grande, you can see the river as it flows through the bend toward the Gulf of Mexico from its origin in the Rocky Mountains. Building sandbars along its route, the waterway defines the southern edge of Big Bend National Park and the northern edge of Mexico for 118 miles. Scrubby bushes with some secret source of water dot the arid landscape, determined to grow wherever they can.
