I shot the reference image for this new panoramic painting from the window of my car on a cold February morning, having stopped on the shoulder for safety. The early light is so ephemeral--I act quickly. Back in the studio, I choose a wide canvas to express this high desert moment. Trying to hold onto the transitory nature of the scene presented to me that morning, I paint with sweeping strokes. The eagle, not part of the picture that day, begs to be included. It's barely there, like something fragile that could vanish entirely if I don't fight for it.
