Before Serena

Laura Hunt

Regular price $2,595.00

Before Serena speaks of a time when most tennis players were white, and when women's sports did not receive due respect. Title IX changed that for women athletes, but it would take the talents of Serena and Venus Williams to pave the way for young African American tennis players.

Themes of hopes, dreams, regret, popularity, angst and coming of age appear in this collection of paintings. Cultural markers like big hair and Classic Coke bottles may elicit a pleasant wave of nostalgia for those who lived it, but may also unearth long-buried stories of youth—some ready to share, others better left untold. For those who did not live it, The Yearbook Revisited offers a glimpse into the social climate experienced by an earlier generation. Viewing it through the filter of time is sure to open conversations about how much has changed and how much has remained the same.
