Composition & Values Workshop: Overview

To receive notice of Early Bird Registration, express your interest here.

Beginning a new painting is so exciting! Everything is possible. You feel a masterpiece inside you. Then halfway through, you find yourself struggling. Something feels wrong, but you can’t put your finger on it. You try adding more detail, removing detail, looser brushwork, tighter brushwork—anything to achieve your vision, but nothing works. It’s frustrating.

In this workshop, you’ll learn to build a stronger foundation at the very beginning, and how to identify issues you may bump into along the way. No matter what medium you use, or what genre you enjoy, composition and values are at the heart of building stronger work.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  1. Compositional structures to build your work on.
  2. How to use composition and values to establish a mood.
  3. How to use and control light, medium and dark tones.
  4. How the masters used composition and values to make powerful paintings.
  5. How to crop your photographic references with composition and values in mind.
  6. How to lead the viewers eye through the artwork.

Add your name to the Workshop Interest list. Expressing interest in a future class gives you the opportunity to register before the class is publicized more broadly. It also puts you on a waiting list in the event of a cancellation.
